The AAT Foundation Certificate in Bookkeeping is an ideal starting point for anyone wishing to pursue a career in accountancy or finance. The purpose of this qualification is to offer a solid introduction to core bookkeeping knowledge and skills including trial balance standards and associated documents and processes.

Completion of this course could be either the first step to a career working as a professional bookkeeping, or alternatively be the start of your journey into accountancy leading to further AAT qualifications.


By completing and passing two modules you will gain an AAT Level 2 Foundation Certificate in Bookkeeping.

The course will consist of two modules:

  • Bookkeeping Transactions
  • Bookkeeping Controls


Supported online learners will have access to our Virtual Learning Environment which provides all course materials and content. Learners can log in at any time as long as they have internet access.

Learners will also have access to a Tutor to support them through their studies. Learners will be required to dedicate between 6 – 10 hours flexibly per week.


All AAT assessments are practical computer based assessments (CBAs) and marked automatically.

During the AAT Foundation Certificate in Bookkeeping you will sit 2 assessments which must be sat either at Newcastle College or an external AAT Test Centre.

After successfully completing the AAT Foundation Certificate in Accounting, you can either complete the remaining modules for the AAT Foundation Certificate in Accounting (Level 2), or progress to the AAT Advanced Diploma in Accounting (Level 3) Online Learning course.

All learners wishing to progress directly to Level 3 must evidence their assessment performance and complete an interview to assess their application.



Learners wishing to study this qualification must hold GCSE’s in Mathematics and English at Grade C, 4 or above.

If a learner does not hold these qualifications an admission decision can be made based on their practical accounting work experience.
